About SpaceBole
SpaceBole is a small, independent journal of amateur astronomy and dark-sky observation. We publish field reports from contributing observers, a monthly almanac, and the occasional long-form essay on the craft of looking up.
What we publish
- Field reports. Short, structured observations from contributing astronomers — equipment, conditions, coordinates and what they actually saw.
- The monthly almanac. A short email tied to the lunar cycle: what's worth observing this month, sunrise/sunset, ISS passes worth a watch, and a small reading suggestion.
- Long essays. Occasional pieces on observation technique, dark-sky preservation and the long, slow history of amateur astronomy.
- Travel logs. Short visits to dark-sky reserves, observatories and public-access sites, with practical access notes.
Editorial standards
- Real observations. Every field report represents an actual session with equipment listed and conditions noted.
- Open to all skill levels. We commission first-time reports as carefully as we edit veteran ones.
- Light on tracking. No third-party advertising, minimal email analytics, no pixel tracking inside body content.
- Mark sponsored items. When a partner pays for placement we label it clearly; when we accept review equipment, we disclose it.
The team and the network
The journal is run by a tiny editorial team with a much larger network of contributing observers — currently around 40 people across Europe, the UK, North America and Australia. Most submissions are from amateur observers in clubs and informal groups; some are from working researchers writing in a personal capacity.
How to contribute
If you'd like to submit a field report, write a long essay or co-host a regional travel log, drop us a line at editor@spacebole.com. We pay flat per-piece rates for commissioned long-form work and gladly publish unpaid field reports from new observers.
